Bio

Jewelia is the moniker of London-based singer-songwriter and producer Iulia Tache. Her music is a mixture of art pop, new age and electronica, centred around emotional vocals and poignant lyrics and melodies.

Iulia had a keen interest in songwriting from an early age - writing 'poems' since the age of five and recording her first original songs at a local studio when she was thirteen. In 2005 she was admitted at 'Dinu Lipatti' Music College in Bucharest, a specialist school where she studied music and drama.

She continued her musical studies at the National Conservatoire of Bucharest until 2012. During this period her band Ender had an appearance on the national television in Romania and made it to the finals of the Stufstock Newcomers festival. 'Help me out', a song born from another collaboration was played on a major indie radio station in Romania, Radio Guerilla.

In 2012 Iulia moved to the UK to study Creative Music Technology at University of Surrey, where she met Andy Denyer, who has since joined the project. In 2014 Jewelia self-released a debut EP entitled 'Monsters', a combination of art pop, alternative, neo-classical and electronica, which was produced in collaboration with Andy Denyer.

In 2015, Jewelia's song “Aquarium” was selected as the official soundtrack of "13 Shades of Romanian", a crowdfunded award-winning mini-series that was aired on several Romanian TV channels and was screened at film festivals in London, Los Angeles Cinefest, Rome Film Festival, TMMF, and others. The soundtrack was also aired on major Romanian stations (National FM and Europa FM), and also on Eagle Radio (Surrey & Hampshire).

Since 2012 Jewelia has been gathering a small, but devoted UK fan base from playing numerous acoustic gigs around London, Surrey, Essex and Hertfordshire, but also online, through regular YouTube releases (over 800,000 views on YouTube channel).

Her debut album 'City of My Mind' has been funded through a successful Kickstarter campaign that raised over £4200. 'Dead Leaves’, one of the songs on the forthcoming album has been played on BBC Introducing and extensively on Cambridge 105 and on Cam FM. The album was released in December 2018 with a packed launch party at Roadtrip & The Workshop in London.

In August 2019 Jewelia has released a new EP called "This Love Song is Better Left Unsung". This was also crowdfunded on Kickstarter.

"Absolutely magical and endearing. Undoubtedly one of my favourite albums in 2018!"

Sandy Mills, Cam FM (on "City of My Mind")

"Casually paced but with more than a hint of mysticism underpinning the words, “City of My Mind” is more reflective, and perhaps more ambitious, song than most would attempt yet Jewelia has enough charm and artistic presence to pull it off."

Bluesbunny.com (on "City of My Mind" - the title song of the album)

"Jewelia's earlier work was like the young Kate Bush. 'City of My Mind' is radically different, more mature, polished and complex. An Alice in Wonderland surreal quality, reminiscent of Jefferson Airplane."

"Great songwriting and an amazing voice"

Gareth Lloyd, BBC Introducing Three Counties (on "Dead Leaves")

"..her EP “Monsters” being no less than piano-powered fairy tales infused with the kind of romanticism that once cause the masses to become enthralled with the deity that is Kate Bush"

“'Album cover very 1960s, as is the music, avant-garde rock. Indeed you would have to go back to the 1960s to find anyone this good.' - on 'Monsters' EP”

"Excellent performance by Jewelia and Andy at The Keystone. Spine-chilling renditions of Beatles classic 'Yesterday' and Nina Simone 'Feeling good'."

"Listening to this song was like a salve for the soul. The piano work is very nice and clean. It’s obvious this girl has talent."
